Silk Screen Print [Lover, You Should Have Come Over] Lyrics by Jeff Buckley

I designed this piece in my silkscreening class, and it was inspired by Jeff Buckley's evocative song "Lover, You Should Have Come Over".  Hope you like.

Digital Collage [Osaka] 8" x 10"

This is a Photoshop collage I created, using photographs that I took while studying abroad in Osaka, Japan. I wanted to emulate how exciting and overwhelming nightlife in Japan can be. I used a tablet to illustrate the linework.

Also today, one thing is on my mind and I want to say rest in peace, Whitney Houston. Your music touched me all my life.

Screen Printed Curtains [J POP]

I have always loved pattern. In my art classes, I've constantly had to stray away from my tendency to make everything fill the page and repeat. I decided that I would make a pattern for our project, for which we were asked to print on something other than paper.

It was great fun from start to finish. First I made the images vector graphics on the computer, then I laid out the pattern, and then I printed eight separate rounds, for the eight different candy colors. It wasn't difficult, but it was definitely time consuming.

I also painted my white "shabby chic" dresser a new and improved teal. I am all about color at the moment. Enjoy!

Below are the original graphics, pre-burning them into my silk screens. I had to use three large screens to fit all the imagery. I also spent more than I can afford on permaset textile inks in brights, which are so beautifully pigmented.

Acrylic on Illustration Board [Martini] 10"x15"

For "Martini" I restructured Fibonacci's sequence and worked with a diverse color palette based on cool chroma with a few warm sections. The highlighted outline effect was created using thin slices of tape and my good old exacto knife.

Acrylic on Illustration Board [Minimal i & ii] Two 10" x 15" Compositions

Gray
Red Oxide
For this project, we worked with Fibonacci's sequence. I wanted a clean aesthetic and utilized one of my favorite colors, Red Oxide, to contrast with gray tones.

Gallery Show [Installation] Art For Breast Cancer

The information below is in regards to an installation I created for our collaborative art show called Womynhouse. Though four pieces are part of my contribution to the installation, in this post I will focus on the main piece entitled "Twenty Three." The materials used were paper and canvas.

Since the day that my mother told me she had breast cancer in 2002, my life has been colored by different shades of pink. Some days have been dark and complex while others have been brilliant and bright. We lost my mom in the summer of 2008. If someone had told me then, that someday I would feel the immense joy and passion that flows through me today, I simply would not have believed them.

This piece was constructed with three main abstractions in mind: what it means to live with cancer, experiencing loss, then healing and continuing forward.

Losing someone you love is more painful to endure than anything, yet some of the most joyous moments of my life have taken place since my mother passed away. This is because she taught me something very important: there is no time to wait. We must do the things we want to do right away and enjoy the time we have.

I hope anyone who is experiencing a difficult time can know with certainty that even when everything feels like it is overpowered by a dark shade, there is light and hope ahead. We must charge forward with life’s powerful current, or else we give it permission to pull us under.

This piece was created in memory of my mother, Amy Dishell. The 621 loops are dedicated to all women who have battled breast cancer, as well as their loved ones.

Main Piece, Entitled "Twenty Three"

Before and After Pictures: The majority of these strips came from sheets of paper about 24"x30" large. Thanks to the awesome paper cutter in our screen printing lab, I was able to make nice one inch strips.

Mannequin Dedicated to Those who Have had Cancer
My contributions to this portion of the gallery were: the large textile piece "Twenty Three", a Japanese Sumi-E painting of a peony entitled "Blush", an interactive element for viewer participation utilizing the textiles (about 200 left over loops) from my main piece, in which the viewer could write down a name of someone who had been affected by breast cancer and/or a wish they had toward people facing cancer. Also the pink mannequin was created in honor of cancer victims.

It was so special to be a part of this show, and all of the women did a fantastic job. For more information, check out our blog Womynhouse.

Screen Print, Edition 1/8 [Flight] 12" x 16"

1/8 "Flight" Jessica Csanky 2011

Screen printing is a new art to me, and this piece was quite the process. I learned a lot and I would like to share with you the steps that I took.

The inspiration came first from the quote and then from a tarot card image "the fool". I drew the image using pencil and afterward scanned and vectorized my drawing in Illustrator. The script came from an awesome website called DaFont. Once the image was printed, I used an exacto knife to define the colored areas, by Ruby Lithe. Then came emulsifying and burning three screens, followed by color mixing (the most time consuming of any step), and finally I was able to print. I printed each color individually, saving the dark brown for last. In total, the project took about 12 hours and I came out with eight prints that were clean and that I really like. I also printed variations on newsprint and bristol board, utilizing only the dark brown.

Our next project will be to print on a surface other than paper, so stay tuned into the blog!

Mixed Media Design [Questions] 12"x12"x2"

They Lead You in Circles

Side View
I created this piece with questions on my mind. Like the looping fingerprints we each have, questions often lead us in circles, sweeping us through a whole range of thought, but we can never know whether or not there is such thing as a definite answer to certain questions in this life. That is all part of the beauty, mystery, and adventure in life. On our right hands, the "life line" and its adjacent crease form something quite similar to a question mark, and I wanted to portray that. I used an array of organic looking materials and shapes to present my feelings. Materials include: wood, paper, gold leaf, markers, paint pens, and other fibers.
